On January 10th, Nicolas Maduro’s first term ended and with it any remnants of legitimacy. He was sworn in by an illegitimate supreme court in defiance of the democratically-elected National Assembly and the legitimate Supreme Court in exile. Maduro’s action is a direct rejection of the conclusions and recommendations of the Lima Group of Western Hemisphere nations, which called on him not to assume the Office of President and to recognize the powers of the National Assembly.
Please join CSIS Americas for an armchair discussion with Secretary General of the Organization of American States, Luis Almagro about the essential role of the international community in helping to resolve Venezuela’s crisis. Secretary Almagro, from the platform of the OAS, has been a leading voice condemning the violations of the Inter-American Democratic Charter and ongoing human rights abuses committed by the Maduro regime. He also has urged comprehensive policy solutions for Venezuela’s humanitarian crisis and the resulting exodus of millions of Venezuelan migrants overwhelming neighboring countries. The discussion will center on these issues and possible initiatives in the OAS and United Nations, to help re-establish democratic order and respect for human rights in Venezuela.
A presentation made by Secretary Almagro will be followed by a moderated discussion.
